Students have also been working on creating leather masks in crafts class. These masks are made of pig-leather, and were cut, shaped using heat and water, and then painted using acrylic paints.
Students created kiln carvings after researching visual elements from various cultures. Students were required to create their own design that represented a culture, and to make a kiln carving of it. We only have one small glass kiln, so these will take a while to fire. I'll upload more examples as they're fired. Some of these pieces may need to be sanded down and re-fired.
When students finish painting their leather mask, they should spend class time completing a research project. These are the specifications for that research project:
Mosaics and Fused Glass Research Project -Students should type this in MS Word and print it, to turn in to Mrs. O on Monday. -Students should use proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar in their written work. -Students should use complete sentences to write what they learned about the following topics. -Responses should be a minimum of two sentences, but may be more. -Make sure your name is at the top. Prompts Provide a short, written history about the following subjects: -Mosaic art. -Fused glass art. Describe the process of creating these types of work: -Mosaic art. -2 famous mosaic artists. -Fused glass art. Explain the difference between: -Hot glass. -Cool glass. Find images online and paste them into your word document. The images should be of your 5 favorite mosaic artworks, and your 5 favorite fused glass artworks. Print this document out and turn it in to Mrs. O at the beginning of class on Monday. This week in Crafts: Students started designing their culturally themed patterns/layouts for a kiln carving project. Don't know what kiln carving is? A couple of examples are located in this image gallery. They were examples made by a previous class, though. We will be posting more progress pictures as this project continues!
Here's an update on what we're doing in class! Students created designs based off of inspirational quotes, and created them using copper inclusion techniques. Once we fire it in the kiln, copper encased in the glass will remain orange, and copper outside of it will become oxidized! Ask the students what that means!
Students in Mrs. R's Crafts class should print out the Course Description below and return it signed by Friday, 1/23. Please also try to get your material fees in as soon as you can. Thanks for your attention to this!
Welcome to the new semester, the new year, and a whole new beginning painting class! I hope you will enjoy your time with me, and enjoy learning how to draw. Please keep an eye on this blog, as I will be uploading images of your work here. Then you can share it with your friends and family!
Don't forget, work that is high quality and sends a good message may be picked for display in our end of the year art show. So do your best work, because it may be featured! |
